Trudeau was the first leader of a NATO country to visit Cuba after the 1960 American trade embargo. The two men forged an unlikely friendship which lasted from January 1976 until Trudeau's death in 2000. This book takes us through the tumultuous 70s, the Cold War, Detente, and the Human Rights Revolution. That these two men became intellectual soul mates across such a gaping intellectual divide is fascinating. Trudeau's own personal and political troubles throughout much of the 70s provides wonderful insight into Trudeau: the father, husband, politician, and statesman.
