Very interesting, well acted by some of Britain's finest actors.
Interesting Masterpiece Theater production with 6 episodes an hour each. Mountbatten was the last Viceroy in India. Begins in 1946 and has him accepting the Viceroy position when India was still the "jewel in the crown" of the British Empire. The Indians were ready for independence, but had religious conflict internally between the Hindus and the Muslims. Mountbatten served as ambassador and advisor consulting with Nehru, Ghandi and Jinnah (the Muslim League's leader). His treatment at home was challenging as Churchill and other politicians were not ready to give up the Empire. Life in India was even more challenging with lots a violence and killings, displaced people and refugees. Ghandi did not want to partition India, creating a separate area for Muslims (which became Pakistan). There were huge refugee movements as people went to their desired homelands, but the travel was very hostile, bloody, deadly. Series ends with the assassination of Ghandi. The area was very volatile and this miniseries gives a good overview and introduction the the conflict and the transition away from England. Good viewing if you enjoy history and politics.
Was interesting to look up Lady M.B. after watching this...adds a whole other dimension not presented in the film...suggest you do also.
