This book is definitely one of the most glamorous murder mystery books I've ever read, taking place in an upscale town full of socialites and secrets. It has something for everyone, whether you enjoy hearing about the high class fashion choices the four girls wear to their several events and parties, the bone chilling death of their best friend, or the page turning mystery of solving the case. This book is guaranteed to leave you wanting more and it's a miracle to not finish it all in one sitting. Each chapter leaves you with more suspense than the last. Thankfully, the series continues on for books and books to come, so you'll never be in withdrawal.  This is such a well written book and every detail mentioned is used as another clue later on in the story. You'll have fun trying to figure out the real truth as more and more clues and memories are shared. I would give this book a 5/5 star rating for its excellent plot and fantastic execution.

First off, I really do think that the book series is better than the show. By a lot. The characters I imagined here were nothing like the ones I saw watching the first few seasons of the show. But enough said, this intro to the series hit it off with just the perfect amount of tension. the characters are all elaborately real, each with their own problems. Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily are four completely different girls, bonded over one girl: Alison. More specifically, their loss of her. But now, they are faced with a bigger issue: the threats and blackmail from a mysterious "A". What will they do to cover up their dark, deadly secrets? 5/5 stars

The novel Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepherd follows the story of high school teens Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer who begin to get creepy texts from an anonymous person named “A” who threatens to spill all of their deepest, darkest secrets. The only person who knew their secrets was their best-friend and queen-bee Alison Dilaurentis who incidentally disappeared about a year ago. After Ali’s body is found, they must figure out who “A” is - before it’s too late. The books are a bit different from the show but they are still so amazing and captivating. 5/5 stars.

I really enjoy reading the Pretty Little Liars novels. In the book four liars are trying to uncover the secret between the murder of Alison DiLaurentis and who this mysterious A is, who is clearly trying to ruin their lives. I think that the book really shows a lot about what these four girls are dealing with when they think that they have lost their best friend. I think what the book is trying to explain is that when you lose someone of importance they are still there watching your every move. This might be what the main characters, Hannah, Aria, Emily and Spencer are dealing with. They think that their friend Alison is gone but what they don't know is that Ali is watching them every step of the way. I recommend this book series and give it a 4.5/5 star rating.

Unpredictability, intrigue, mystery and a fascinating story, a lot of secrets.

First of all, I'm aware I'm not the person this book is pitched at. It's very definitely, very deliberately pitched at teenage girls. So as a Librarian, I still might recommend this book to teenagers. As someone who reads all sorts and kinds of books, I just didn't think it was very well written. Be aware too, that this book really just sets the scene. A mystery is named, and it's not solved in this first book of the series. The series is 18 books and counting, so prepare yourself for the long haul. Contains sex, drugs, and some hints at violence, but really it's all pretty mild stuff. I'd say it's aimed at 14 years old and up.

The author really knows how to create suspense and drama. The books are so different compared to the show, but of course, the books are better.

I like Sara Shepard's style of writing- a little bit spooky and well-formatted yet very relaxed. Although this book is intriguing and suspenseful, it can improve on several points.
First of all it is a bit unrealistic. I, myself has just completes the seventh grade and the seventh grade that this story depicts is more like ninth or tenth grade in reality.
And secondly, the character's problems were cliche. I wanted to see real life problems, not the problems of a typical 21st century rich girl.
Overall, this book is a three and a half stars for the parts I liked, but deducted for the aspects I didn't.

My initial thought on Pretty Little Liars was that it had an extremely unique premise, especially for a YA book. Unfortunately, it truly fell flat for me.

The characters were unreal beyond belief. Throughout the entire book, I was wondering if it was all a big joke--if this was actually a satire on young society today, but the overall arc of the book was serious, so confusion abounded. The rampant dishonesty, thievery, petulant temper tantrums, pretentiousness etc. were flaws for all the characters. However, instead of adding depth to their personalities, these flaws completely overrode them.

The pacing of the book was great though. I was surprised that for a book with such limited action, it didn't completely lose my interest. Naturally, there was a lot of near-repetition, but it comes with the territory of writing from the perspectives of four characters. Additionally, the increasing complexities of the lies being told and secrets being held was nice. At first read, you are introduced to the secrets of all the characters in about the first ~50 pages or so of the book, but then the secrets get more complex as the girls go about their daily lives. The choices in secrets could have been more scandalous or impactful, but ultimately, it worked out.

So, this book had superficial, one-dimensional characters, a decent plot, and an extremely promising idea. That doesn't justify 1.5 stars. What really brought this book down for me was the focus on sex.

I get it, sex is scandalous, it's an easy way to create massive conflicts, but overusing it is not an answer. Not to dissuade anyone, however, it isn't wantonly overused or described, but I personally just find it a cheap out for creating conflict. Looking at it from a different point of view, it could even make the book more entertaining for many people.

I loved reading this book!! This book was suspenseful and engaging. The only bad thing is that I started watching the show before I knew that there were books so it was easy for me to predict what is going to happen next!! I can not wait to start reading the rest of the series!!!!
