If you like in-depth characterization, this is the best! Catherine Cookson outdoes herself in this story of a woman's relationship to her adult children. She pictures for us the wisdom and objectivity that come with old age, as well as the regrets for past blindness to the truth about her sons.

I first heard this on audiobook and the reader was excellent. Highly recommended.

All her adult life, Fanny has idolized one son. Now, as she gets older and her health fails, she begins to wonder whether she hasn't seen her children all wrong. Cookson does a masterful job of characterization. Add to that the humor of a heroine who can laugh at herself and has the guts to change.
