I wish I'd seen the play. The movie is hard to follow. I can see why some find it offensive, but for me patience paid off. The second half had a better pace and I began to appreciate what these performers were doing. Even aside from the scenic filming of New York highlights, i ended up liking this. Still don't love it but that's okay.

I couldn't get past the first 20 mins. It was offensive to me as a Christian and as a movie lover. Boring, pretentious, contrived, immature.... Gah! Just awful.

I'm not sure how good a representation of Christianity this is, but it could do much worse. Religious belief is not required -- it is as much about leadership, idealism, and loyalty. The film is based on a Broadway musical, and is therefore theatrical -- what, you thought there was a realistic way to sing and dance your way around New York? Anyway, the music is better than in Jesus Christ, Superstar, and the cinematography makes New York look like a colourful adventure playground. Featuring an adorable young Victor Garber.

I was hoping to show this to my unchurched grandchildren as part of our Easter celebrations, but my preview has me returning it to the library shelves. This is still being popularly performed as a play so thought it would be relevant, but it certainly doesn't qualify as an introduction to the story of Jesus for children of today. Bible literacy would be required to understand the dialogue and symbolic references to the Christian story.

If a Christian tells me that this bargain-basement bible story disgraces Christianity, then that's certainly proof enough for me that Godspell's a real stinker._____ Godspell (from 1973) was seriously dated "hippie-dippie" theater._____ Godspell was "flower-power"-less._____ This was a rock bottom Christian musical with an infantile "Sesame Street" mentality. It was severely pretentious and hypocritical._____ Showcasing a continuous line-up of hammy performances and lame jokes straight out of vaudeville, Godspell, with its crucifixion scene set in a junk yard, was hollow and unmoving._____ To keep in pace with the rest of the movie, I think that it was quite ironic that Godspell's only memorable song, "Day By Day", was performed so poorly that this rendered it just as forgettable as the rest of the film. In a sense, this was the film's final disgrace.

I thought it was unwatchable. I made it all the way through only because of liberal use of the FF option. The singing was good, but the songs were mediocre. It was a bit confusing and off-putting as the cast seemed intent on portraying all the characters as brain damaged simpletons or possibly on a really enjoyable acid trip. Weird.

My favourite of all the "Easter" movies. Possibly I'm a child of the sixties (although I doubt it), more likely because this focuses on teaching and concepts, and so doesn't get caught in the trap of overinterpretation.
