From the double Man Booker Prize-winning author of "Wolf Hall" and "Bring up the Bodies." In this brilliant collection of ten stories, all Mantel's gifts of characterization, observation and intelligence are once again fully on display. With settings ranging from Saudi Arabia to Greece to London, they reveal a great writer at the peak of her powers.

Nice to see Hilary Mantel take off her "Wolf Hall"/"Bring Up the Bodies" hat for a bit.

Some really great evocative stories here. My particular favorite was "How Shall I Know You", the one about an author having to go to a small literary festival type event out in the boonies.

Ten short stories; accomplished and witty. "Sorry to Disturb" is particularly good.

All the stories are unsettling and dark; two in particular, "Winter Break" and the title story, were outstanding.

This collection of stories is just as crisp, unnerving, and vivid as I had hoped it might be. A pervasive sense of unease and foreboding hangs over each of these stories, although, for the most part, violence is only hinted at, not seen. Mantel's dark humor adds a wry twist to each tale. Don't expect the sweeping epic style of this author's wonderful Wolf Hall trilogy, but instead settle in to enjoy the trim, lean lines of this short form. A perfect read for an overcast and windy October day.
