The incredible but true story of one of the first carriers lost in the Pacific during World War II. Pummeled by torpedoes, bombs, kamikazes and raked with gunfire, the HORNET was sunk following the Battle of Santa Cruz during the Guadalcanal campaign. She struggled to stay afloat but her damage was too severe and on October 26, 1942 - twelve months to the day after her commissioning - she slipped beneath the seas to permanently rest on Iron Bottom Sound. Her namesake returned to the Pacific and exacted revenge during the Battle of the Marianas. This production is the original film produced during the war, a rare find, long lost in the stacks of tapes held in the military archives. Priceless footage with dramatic battle scenes.
