Pummeled by torpedoes, bombs, kamikazes and raked with gunfire, the HORNET was sunk following the Battle of Santa Cruz during the Guadalcanal campaign. She struggled to stay afloat but her damage was too severe and on October 26, 1942 - twelve months to the day after her commissioning - she slipped beneath the seas to permanently rest on Iron Bottom Sound.
