Chasing The Milky Way is a really in-depth novel, because in the first few pages it seems like a children’s book about a young girl who loves robotics. But eventually you learn about quite a few meaningful messages and you end up reading the entire book in one sitting. Lucy has been to the coast every year and has always seen the Robotics competition that takes place there; but this year things will be different. This year there is no Gran, no birthday by the sea, and her eye is on the prize. This year she’ll be participating in the Robot competition with her programmed robot, alongside little sister Izzy and best friend Cam. The turn in this novel is that Lucy’s mother suffers from a maniacal mental illness that is really taking a toll on her and her children, but Lucy is shown as someone who is really strong and independent in the sense that she is staying by her mother’s side. One of my favourite things about this book is that the main focus is on the main characters; but you still see glimpses of all the supporting ones throughout the entire book. The ending will surely bring tears to your eyes. Rating 4/5
