The Missing
Two schoolgirls are abducted in the small, dying Warwickshire town of Polesford, driving a knife into the heart of the community where police officer Helen Weeks grew up and from which she long ago escaped. But this is a place full of secrets, where dangerous truths lie buried.

The Accused
When it's splashed all over the press that family man Stephen Bates has been arrested, Helen and her partner Tom Thorne head to the flooded town to support Bates' wife - an old school friend of Helen's - who is living under siege with two teenage children and convinced of her husband's innocence.

The Dead
As residents and media bay for Bates' blood, a decomposing body is found. The police believe they have their murderer in custody, but one man believes otherwise. With a girl still missing, Thorne sets himself on a collision course with local police, townsfolk - and a merciless killer.

Tom Thorne returns in a chilling mystery that will keep readers guessing until the final page. Time of Death is Mark Billingham's most timely, atmospheric thriller to date.

A kidnap/abduction thriller featuring Tom Thorne as the usual flawed, egocentric, always in trouble detective sticking his nose into a case where he has no jurisdiction. His friend Hendricks, the unconventional gay pathologist comes to Thorne's aid and adds much to the novel's success and to solving the crime. Helen, Thorne's girlfriend is also involved as she steps back into her hated hometown to her own secret and dark past.
Overall a well written suspenful novel although a bit slow in places

Excellent. A top-notch series by a very talented author. Interesting plot with an exceptionally devious bad guy.

A good addition to the series but I prefer Thorne in London settings.

If you're already a fan of this series, you greet each book with certain expectations. First, it's a chance to catch up with Tom Thorne & Phil Hendricks. Then you look forward to a smart suspense story, twisty plots, economical dialogue & a hair raising finale. Book #13 ticks all the boxes.
This more of a slow burn than the last instalment (which left me only slightly less traumatized than Tom & Phil).
It's a thinking man's thriller full of clever misdirection. There's a blizzard of red herrings to wade through & you're in danger of sustaining whiplash as your focus swings from one suspect to the next. Events & comments that seem unimportant are tossed out along the way but will have you smacking your forehead at the end. It's been a long time since I was so surprised to learn a killer's identity.
It's the kind of read that makes you lose track of time & frown on any interruptions so don't crack the cover until you find a spot to hide for a few hours.
