The novel's protagonist, a down-on-his luck young man, sets out to destroy a successful older writer's career by devising and unleashing a diabolical scheme to ruin his reputation. The scheme turns on switching DNA samples so that the teenager's claim to be the writer's daughter is believed. What ensues is a descent into psychological nightmare for the writer, who actually believes he has made love to his daughter. As readers, we know that she is not his daughter, and we are riveted by this cruel trick, this act of sheer destruction of another human being. In many ways, this is a social satire, a risk-taking and very courageous book that speaks to a dark underbelly beneath the cult of celebrity and greed and envy that define our times.
