2016 marked the 25th anniversary of this terrible plane crash in one of the harshest places on earth. Just try to imagine what it might have been like when you are outside this winter here in Ottawa and expose bare skin for 5 minutes. I can't imagine how so many of the 18 were able to survive that horrific crash. A true testament to the strength of humans. Those that worked so hard at helping the injured and then the rescuers who were incredibly brave in everything they did. Such an incredible story on the will to live in the very worst of situations.
A harrowing real-life adventure, written by a very fine journalist. A story of survival in the face of extreme adversity, an air crash at the top of the world, including the phenomenal efforts of the rescue teams. Intensely personal experiences of a group of quite ordinary people caught up in a situation they couldn't possibly have been prepared for. Enriched by the author's portrayal of that very peculiar breed of men who become "SarTechs" Search and Rescue Technicians.
In some ways, the book calls to mind the works of Nevil Shute -- but in this case the story is entirely true.
So gripping that I read the entire book in one sitting!
