This book seems to be leading toward a change in direction. Ava is taking more of a role in the organization of the entire process and Uncle is guiding her to being more independent and toward a possible new business partner?
It also starting filling in some details of the rest of her extended family, her eldest half brother and his fiance have large roles in this story and her father figures far more in this one than in any other.
While there is a less than usual amount of international traveling here, there is a lot of information about the triads and the Chinese version of Las Vegas, Macau to make up for the lack of destinations.
This story felt the most unreal of them all so far, I mean, I liked all the action and the menacing bad guys but everything just seemed to fall together so neatly. Maybe it really would work this way but the probabilities of it working out so well was a bit unbelievable.

Seems to me that Ian Hamilton started to run out of ideas with successive Ava Lee books. In the #1 The Water Rat of Wanchai, Ava displayed a terrific arsenal of crafty tricks to track down the people who made off with someone else's money. Her style, resourcefulness and skill in martial arts all added up to a fascinating character. But with successive books, it all begins to grow a bit thin and she increasingly resorts to brute force, helped along by some conveniently available guanxi (influence with powerful people) to achieve her ends. Hamilton's incessant references to high profile designer apparel, accessories, name brand this and that also become tiresome. If he happens to be receiving payment for product placements as one would expect, he should by now be in a position to pay us to read his books!
This, the 4th book in the series will be the last that I plan to read.

Another frothy Ava Lee confection from Ian Hamilton. This is one starts with a wee bit of forensic auditing, but the bad boys soon make it clear they won't be paying their bills voluntarily. Let the murder and mayhem begin! An armoured assault on a Macau triad stronghold doesn't leave much time for Ava to model designer fashions, so we'll need to catch up with her wardrobe in the next instalment.

This is the best book so far in the Ava Lee series. Not so much product placement and we get some glimpses into future possible story lines.

Ava is exhausted from her international travels -- and this series is getting tired, as well. Plenty of to-ing and fro-ing, but not much action. Mildly entertaining, but getting formulaic.

This book in the Ava Lee series is like the others, except there appears to be less brand-name promotion here. The story line is fairly tight and does get your attention. I think it is one of the better ones in the series.
