The Longest Whale Song is the first book I read by UK writer Jacqueline Wilson as I child, and I must say there is a reason I scoured the library shelves for books under her name shortly after! Such a beautiful and mesmerizing story about a special young girl named Ella who lives with her loving Mum and her stepfather Jack. Ella is mostly disgusted by Jack and doesn’t attempt to make any relation with him, but when her Mum goes into a coma after giving birth to baby Sam, the two are forced to make amends in their relationship and work together to get through this hard time. Along the way Ella learns to accept when things aren’t going the way she wants, and gets a new perspective on the connections she has with other people. Equal bits funny, sad and indulging, The Longest Whale Song highlights how Ella’s fascination and interest with the blue whales might just save her Mum. A vibrant and important book for the younger audiences. Rating 4/5
