From the author of Outlander ... a magnificent epic that once again sweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of 18th-century Scotland...

For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ...about a love that transcends the boundaries of time ...and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his ....

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire's spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ...in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising ...and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves....

I just started the Outlander series a week ago and I am hooked. The second book was exceptional. I haven't been that emotionally moved by a book in a long time and I read a lot. Cannot wait to continue reading as well as catching up on the show which is doing a great job following the books.

This being the second book in the Outlander series, I was hoping for a little more from this one, didnt quite rise to my expectations. Not quite as thrilling as the first.

I absolutely love this series so far. Am anxiously awaiting the third book . I have just added another great autor to my best loved author list. Well worth the read but try to start with book one - Outlander

The sequel to Outlander starts off with a bang when Claire returns to Scotland with her adult daughter and twenty years after she returned from the 18th century. After that the book is a slow burn until the middle where it comes back again and is fast paced and addictive.

3.5 stars
Another epic saga following the lives of time-traveler, Claire, and her 18th century Highlander husband, Jamie.
I didn't like this as much as the first one -- I got bogged down in the Parisian politics and royal court antics.
The last 100 pages were the best, as Jamie and Claire must decide how to survive the Battle of Culloden.
I hated the modern postscript that concluded the book, although I'm sure it was necessary in terms of the the continued story-line.
But I'm totally hooked on Jamie and Claire -- and will add Voyager to my reading queue.

LONG read, but sooo worth it! Might be best series I've ever read. Cried & cried at the next to the last chapter, but then Gabaldon hooks you in for the next book. Superb!

I guess I am one of the few who is bored by this book. Half way through and I don't think I'm going to make it. Love the historical details, but the melodrama destroys the credibility too many times. For example (spoiler): who can believe that Claire would place recently-raped young girl in their home under the care of the distressed man who loves her on the night when Claire and Jamie are hosting a party. The distraught girl bursts into the party....no surprises as to what happens next. Could we have a bit more subtlety please?

This book is my favorite in the Outlander series. I loved the time in France and wept before Culloden.

If you love historical fiction, this is a MUST read. Well researched and completely engrossing. I LOVED this book as much as I did the previous one in the series.

"D'ye think I don't know?" he asked softly. "It's me that has the easy part now. For if ye feel for me as I do for you -- then I am asking you to tear out your heart and live without it."
