I'm an avid fan of Disney's The Great Mouse Detective, and it is one of my favorite animated films of all time. However, I didn't realize until recently that the film is based on a series of children's novels by Eve Titus. In this first book in the series, Basil (Sherlock Holmes' mousey understudy) joins forces with a doctor named Dawson (Watson's counterpart) to find the missing children of Mrs. Proudfoot. I had so much fun reading this book from its charming illustrations to its thrilling mystery. It has all of the pizzazz and eccentricity of Sherlock Holmes but remains suitable and accessible for children of all ages. I finished this book on a rainy afternoon and had to put the rest of the series on hold right away. This is by far my favorite Sherlock adaptation in both book and movie format, and I can't wait to see where Basil's adventures take him next.

Anybody remember these? They've been out of print for a while, but now they're back! Argue all you want about whether Cumberbatch, Rathbone, or Downey Jr. is the best Sherlock of all time, but Basil here, aka The Great Mouse Detective, is far and away the greatest mouse who ever occupied 221B Baker Street.
